Recessed lighting handles the practical stuff, but it's lamps that actually set the mood. In the living room, the bedroom, the office — wherever you want a little more warmth — a good lamp is the ambient light that makes a room feel like somewhere you actually want to be. Walk in after a long day, click on every lamp you own, and feel the whole place settle.
They're doing plenty of work even when they're off, too. A great lamp adds personality, anchors a room, and can make an empty corner feel finished.
We've pulled together a round of table lamps across four style buckets — find yours, then find the lamp that fits it. Before you buy: measure the lamp and the table it's about to sit on. We've included a few basic guidelines below to make that easier.

Don't fall for the same mistakes we did -- measure your table space before you order! Here are some simple guidelines:
1. For side tables: work backward from the floor. The bottom of the lampshade should land at roughly your eye level when seated — typically 58 to 64 inches from the floor. Since most side tables sit between 26 and 30 inches tall, that leaves you about 28 to 32 inches of lamp to work with.
2. For bedside tables: use the chin check. Because you're propped up rather than fully seated, eye level isn't the right reference. When sitting up in bed, the bottom of the shade should align with your chin. Any higher and you're reading under a spotlight. Any lower and the light barely reaches the page. For a standard nightstand — typically 24"–28" tall — a lamp in the 24"–28" range hits the sweet spot.
3. Match visual weight, not just height. A slim, delicate base on a thick, chunky table will feel wrong unless you plan on populating the space with books or other accessories. Similarly, a heavy ceramic column on a spindly accent table might just feel off. Make sure the table and lamp belong together!
